FITNESS TESTS

AGILITY
Agility is the ability to change direction quickly. This fitness component is measured via running tests that entail the subject to turn, change direction start and stop. Agility is also influenced by other factors such as balance, co-ordination, and centre of gravity, speed and skill. E.g. shuttle run test, Illinois agility test, zig zag and 505 agility runs.

SPEED
The max rate at which a person is able to move over a specific distance. Speed gates are used to assess basic speed and to look at the phases of acceleration, deceleration and the ability to maintain max speed.

VO2 MAX

Aerobic fitness is the ability to sustain exercise for extended periods without fatigue. A person's aerobic fitness level is determined by assessing oxygen uptake and utilisation. Exercise is performed on a specific sports related ergometer (treadmill, cycle, swim bench, rower). The test involves a progressive protocol to the point of exhaustion.
Field tests are also available to determine VO2 max depending upon the specific requirements of the sport.

OBLA
Represents the point of significant increase in blood lactate concentration. Involves a progressive protocol with blood samples being taken at the end of each workload in order to determine the point of OBLA. The optimal training intensity is expressed as a workload, heart rate and VO2 value.

ANAEROBIC CAPACITY
Anaerobic capacity tests measure an individual's ability to produce energy via the ATP-PC or lactic acid system. Wingate tests on a cycle ergometer are used to determine alactacid and lactacid ability: Some of the measures that can be gained from this test are mean and peak power, and a fatigue index determined from the decline in power.

POWER
Is defined as the ability to exert a maximal force quickly, e.g. vertical jump, broad jump.

STRENGTH
Is the ability to carry out work against a resistance. Each strength test is sports specific in relation to the action and muscle groups utilised. E.g. 1 RM, isokinetic tests, dynamometer tests.

BODY COMPOSITION

Body composition refers to the contribution of muscle, bone and fat in the body. Its measurement plays an important role in both sport and health. Excess body fat can lead to obesity and increases the risk of illness. In sports, excess fat can be detrimental to performance. The amount of body fat is expressed as a percentage of total body weight E.G. skin fold callipers, bio electrical impedance.

NUTRITION
Nutritional analysis and guidance available.

FLEXIBILITY
Flexibility is the range of movement around a joint. There are direct and indirect methods of measuring flexibility. Indirect measurements include the sit and reach test. Direct methods include goniometer measurements.

TESTING PROGRAMMES
Individual tests can be requested or a programme of testing can be designed based on the specific nature of your sport. The programme of support will be designed taking into consideration the important components of fitness for the desired sport.
Muscular screening/biomechanical analysis and psychological profiling available.

PROGRAMMES AVAILABLE
